Lacrosse Shootout Tournament

Equinox Lacrosse Association (ELA) welcomes 72 teams to its annual Equinox Shootout to be held Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and June 5 at the Manchester Rec park. Students in grades 5/6 and 7/8 make up the teams; the boys playing on Saturday and the girls on Sunday. Teams from Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire will compete. Admission is free. Over 2000 are expected to attend. There will be food tents, equipment vendors, tournament T-shirts and stick stringing available. While the boys’ game emphasizes physical prowess, speed and skill, the girls’ game emphasizes quickness and stick skills, for two very different games sharing the same roots. The first truly North American sport, lacrosse was played by various tribes of the Iroquois. ELA hosts teams from kindergarten to eighth grade. Teamwork, conditioning, eye-hand coordination and leadership skills are all taught by volunteer coaches with high school and college level experience. Croquet Teams Forming

Every Thursday, from June to August, teams of three compete on a six-wicket croquet course at the historic Park McCullough House at 1 Park Street in North Bennington. The evenings start with a pot luck dinner and cash bar at 6 p.m., with play beginning at 6:30. League play is open to all members. If you are non-member and wish to start a team, you can sign  up for membership with your teammates. You can also drop in as an alternate for a single fee per game to see what it’s like. All levels are welcome. There is no dress code, but many choose to dress all in white. The league has been playing every summer for decades. The first meeting will be Thursday, June 9; games begin on June 16.  The price is $100 per season. This price includes a $50 membership, a $50 croquet membership (ten evenings of play), court set-up, buffet set-up, and cash bar. Call 802-442-5441 or visit parkmccullough.org for details.
