6th Grader’s Essay Wins Contest

Enrique de la RosaHarned-Fowler VFW Post 6471 announces Enrique de la Rosa, 6th grader at Dorset Elementary School, has advanced as Post 6471’s winner of the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen essay contest for 6 to 8 graders, and also won to District 1 VFW of VT and Vermont State VFW.  Enrique placed first out of 49 entries at the post level, competing against fellow students from Manchester Elementary and Maple Street Schools. Rachel Kimball, 7th grader at MEMS placed second at post level, second at District 1, and was runner up at Vermont State; Ian MacFarlane, 8th grader at Maple Street, placed third at post level. The students were asked to write an essay on “What Patriotism Means to Me.” More than 100,000 6 to 8-grade students participate nationally. Harned-Fowler VFW Post 6471 awards $300 first place, $200 second place and $100 third place scholarships plus certificates and book bags to the top three entries, District 1 VFW paid $100 1st place, $60 2nd Place and $40 3rd place.  Enrique has advanced to National VFW level representing Vermont to compete against 53 of his peers to earn $5000 and a trip to Washington D.C.
