A Weston Walk-a-thon and Carnival Will Benefit Local Non-Profit, Just Neighbors
Get ready to have fun helping the local non-profit, Just Neighbors on Sunday, July 27, at a Walk-a-thon, starting at 2 p.m. at the Weston Recreation Area, located just off Route 100 in Weston. Afterward, an Old-fashioned Carnival will be held with music, games, a delicious barbecue and more until 6 p.m.
This event is intended to raise much needed funds for Just Neighbors, a volunteer organization dedicated to providing short-term assistance to local people who are experiencing a sudden and overwhelming challenge in their living situations. Just Neighbors provides for basic life necessities to address safety, security and other essential components to support family and housing needs. These services include providing firewood, transportation and fuel assistance, as well as necessary food, clothing, housing and vehicle assistance to the vulnerable in the Andover, Bondville, Chester, Jamaica, Landgrove, Londonderry, South Londonderry, Peru, Winhall and Weston areas. According to Jean Peters, president of Just Neighbors, “This past year was especially challenging for many to keep warm with such severe winter temperatures. Thankfully we were able to assist those in need and partner with other local organizations including Neighborhood Connections, Southeastern Vermont Community Action, town clerks, churches and food banks, as well as neighbors, family and community leaders, to meet the needs of this vulnerable part of our community.” The 2014/15 winter is projected to significantly increase Just Neighbors’ firewood and fuel demands to over 100 percent from last year, and as wells as increases to medical, fuel, energy and housing assistance support services.
