On Sunday, September 25, at the annual ‘Give Back by Taking Out’ River Clean Up, the Battenkill Conservancy (BkC) in conjunction with Battenkill Valley Outdoors, will launch its ‘Collect a Can’ reusable bag program. The program will encourage BVO’s customers to use the nylon mesh, reusable bags to voluntarily collect stray cans or bottles that have found their way into the river. The bags will attach to the canoe, kayak or tube so that at the end of trip bags will be be returned with the rest of the equipment. The collected cans will be set out for local scout groups to retrieve and return as a fundraising tool. Depending on the response to this pilot program, BkC will expand the effort to encompass all of BVO’s equipment rentals and to other outfitters on the river including Battenkill Riversports. The objective is to increase people’s awareness of the impact of irresponsible behavior by those who forget that using the river, riverbanks or roadsides as a garbage dump is not – and has never been – acceptable. The River Clean Up begins at 10:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to pack a lunch to enjoy at BVO afterwards. The event is free, but advance registration prior to September 23 is required by calling 518-677-3311 as space and equipment availability is limited. Additional information is available by emailing bkc@battenkillconservancy.org.
