Phil Anton won a Lifetime Achievement Award for his service as a school counselor.

The Vermont School Counselor Association (VTSCA) annually recognizes the best school counseling professionals in the state. This year, the winner of VTSCA’s lifetime achievement award is Phil Anton, who retired from his position of director of guidance at Burr and Burton Academy in June of 2015, after 21 years of service to BBA. Known for his selfless spirit and positive, humorous approach to life, Phil was a trusted colleague to whom many people turned for advice and leadership. He served as the director of guidance at both the Canaan Schools and at Black River High School in Ludlow before coming to BBA. Having worked with students in from kindergarten through 12th grade throughout his 35 year career in Vermont, Phil had a true understanding of the social, emotional, and academic developmental process of the individual. He demonstrated a keen ability to relate to a wide variety of students; his kind personality and sense of humor made him a counselor whom students were never afraid to approach. He treated all colleagues and students with respect, and that respect was returned to him. Phil’s door was always open to everyone and he welcomed people with a smile. His perpetual optimism and upbeat attitude were contagious In addition to being a mentor to many colleagues, Phil coached Girl’s Varsity Soccer and Softball, Middle School Soccer and Park and Rec Basketball. He served two terms on the Dorset School Board, and was a 20 year volunteer for the Windsor County and Bennington County Court Diversion Review Board, as well as serving on its Board of Directors.
