Bennington St. Patrick’s Parade Grand Marshal Announced
Bennington’s 2016 Saint Patrick’s Parade on Sunday, March 20, beginning at 1 p.m., will be led by Bennington native and decorated veteran Joseph Krawczyk. John Shannahan, director of the Better Bennington Corporation, commented that “The Saint Patrick’s Parade Grand Marshal is an honorary position reserved for an individual in our community who, through their actions, sets an example of service above self-interest. The Parade committee was pleased to select an individual who has dedicated so many years of his life, not only to the service of our community, but also to our state and to our country.”
Krawczyk is a third generation Bennington resident. He first served in the military as an Armored Reconnaissance Scout before being commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the US Calvary and was assigned as a Platoon Leader in Vietnam in 1968 and 1970. While serving in combat, he was awarded a Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, four Bronze Stars for Heroism and Service, and two Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat. Upon returning to Bennington, he served on the Select Board for 12 years, in the Vermont State Legislature for eight years and was vice chairman of the Natural Resource and Energy Committee. In 2011, Governor Peter Shumlin appointed Joe to the Board of Trustees at the Vermont State Veterans’ Home, where he currently serves as president of the board.
Joe is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1332, American Legion Post 13, the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Disabled American Veterans and the Bennington Elks Lodge 567.
