Canfield Welcomes Sandgate Artist
Rachel Barlow of Sandgate will show recent watercolors at The Canfield Gallery in the Martha Canfield Library on East Arlington Road from April 1 to 30. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, April 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. Under the theme ‘Fingerprints,’ the exhibit is based on drawings she made in Vermont and while traveling in Michigan and Washington state. “I am fascinated by human fingerprints left on the once-natural world,” says the artist, “and by the fragility of civilization that these attempts to tame the land actually represent.” Barlow has been drawing and doodling since she could hold a pencil. Mostly self-taught, she recently branched out into watercolor as a way to enhance and illustrate her regular blog, called ‘Picking My Battles.’ She was a featured artist at the Bedlam Farm Open House in Cambridge, N.Y., in 2015; at the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, the Petersburgh Library in Petersburgh, N.Y., and most recently, at Equinox Village in Manchester. The Canfield Gallery will be open during library hours. More information can be found at marthacanfieldlibrary.org.
