Dorset Players: ‘She Loves Me’
The Dorset Players present their spring musical ‘She Loves Me,’ at the Dorset Playhouse 104 Cheney Road in Dorset, Vt. Show dates are Thursday through Saturday, 7:30 p.m., May 15, 16 and 17, and 22, 23 and 24, with matinees on Sunday, May 18 and 25, at 2 p.m. This musical is based on the 1936 Hungarian play ‘Parfumerie,’ and has the humble distinction of living in the shadow of the more famous movies and Broadway musical that it inspired. Hollywood has cashed in on the play by Miklós László, not once but three times. The first adaptation was the 1940 romantic comedy ‘The Shop Around the Corner,’ starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. That was followed by the 1949 screen musical version, ‘In the Good Old Summertime,’ starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson, and then much later by the 1998 movie ‘You’ve Got Mail,’ with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
‘She Loves Me’ revolves around shop employees Georg and Amalia who, despite being consistently at odds with each other at work, are unaware that each is the other’s secret pen pal. Local favorites Vanessa Beattie, Richard Grip and Shannon Thompson along with newcomer to the Dorset Stage, Mike McCord and the rest of the cast of almost 20 have been working since January to bring you an evening of music, comedy and great entertainment. Directed by Jeff Linebeck with music direction by Richard Cherry, the show boasts smart and lively banter and a score of cleverly worded and memorable songs.
