Dr. Welther to Return to Battenkill Valley Health Center

Michael Welther, MD, who founded Arlington Family Practice in 1987 and later became an member of the staff at Battenkill Valley Health Center (BVHC), accepted a position at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in 2015. Three and half years later, he is returning. Welther served the families of Arlington for nearly 28 years before helping SVMC open the Pownal Campus. “I have sincerely enjoyed my three years in Pownal, and am grateful for the community’s support as I return back home to BVHC,” Welther said. “As a family medicine physician, I look forward
to utilizing the support of my future colleagues at BVHC who deliver mental health and substance abuse counseling, general dental care, nurse case management and nutrition counseling all under one roof.”

BVHC is a community health center that receives funds from the US Department of Health and Human Services to provide primary care services to all, regardless of their ability to pay. It is currently the only federally qualified health center in Bennington County, and one of just 12 in Vermont. BVHC co-executive director Anje Van Berckelaer is delighted with Welther’s return. “In addition to the welcome return of Dr. Welther to the BVHC team, I’m excited to report that we’ll be using recent Health Resources and Services Administration grant funding to hire an additional family physician in 2019 to join the team as a primary care doctor for patients of all ages and also expand our capacity for Medication-Assisted Treatment of opioid use disorder.” Welther will continue serving patients in Pownal through the New Year and will return to BVHC mid-February. Patients who wish to continue their care with Dr. Welther in Arlington should reach out to the SVMC Pownal office to coordinate the transfer of their records and
complete a release form. To learn more about BVHC, visit
