Paralympic skier Tyler Carter has been speaking to students at Burr and Burton Academy, Manchester Elementary and Middle School  and Dorset School, encouraging them to follow their dreams, work hard and never give up. He also spoke recently with students involved with the leadership program at BBA. Tyler has spent much of the past year mentoring young people around the country. An athlete mentor with Classroom Champions, a program that works to positively impact students in under-served communities and show them what it takes to persevere, and a winter resident of Colorado where he trains and competes, he came to Manchester this summer to live, train and study yoga.

“We brought Tyler to our community because he has a unique way of inspiring those around him, especially kids and young adults. He recognizes that everyone faces challenges in their lives. He doesn’t use his disability as an excuse or a crutch. Tyler has accepted his disability with grace, broken through perceived limits to excel in alpine ski racing, and has a way of humbly helping those around him to see beyond their own personal challenges,” says Bob Speck of Heart of the Village Yoga. “Last week, he even helped me lead a few combat veterans across the Presidential Traverse in the White Mountains, a hike that was especially inspirational because of the rain, wet boulders, cold temperatures and high winds!”

Join Heart of the Village Yoga in welcoming Tyler at a Farm-to-Table Harvest Dinner and Silent Auction on Sunday, September 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester. Tyler, who competed in the giant slalom ski event in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, will share his experiences as a young athlete competing in adaptive sports.

Items in the silent auction  feature healthy active experiences. Dinner tickets, $30 for adults and $15 for ages seven to 17, may be purchased at bit.ly/2bv2ANw or at Heart of the Village Yoga, 3556 Main Street, Manchester. Proceeds will support Tyler’s quest to compete in the 2017 Alpine Skiing World Championships in Italy, and his ultimate goal to compete in the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in South Korea.
