Free Introductory Classes Offered in Pilates and Qigong
The Yoga Place, 532 Main Street, Bennington, is starting the new year off with two free introductory classes as part of its upcoming January/February 2016 schedule of offerings: Qigong on Tuesdays, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., beginning Tuesday, January 5. Qigong is easier to learn than tai chi or yoga and is commonly used in China to enhance and maintain health. Qigong may be practiced from a chair as well as standing. The class will be facilitated by Tracy Purdy-Martin, activities director at Bennington Project Independence, who was introduced to Qigong when she was facing knee replacement surgery, and found relief from her pain. “I believe that everyone can learn to heal themselves through the practice of Qigong,” she says.
Pilates is offered Wednesdays, 9 to 10 a.m., starting with a free class on Wednesday, January 6, taught by Daisy Levy. The class is open to anyone, no matter what shape you are in. Pilates is all about strengthening your core muscles to become more balanced and less prone to injury and back pain. Levy has taught Pilates for 15 years. She came to Pilates as a dancer and used it to rehabilitate from shoulder surgery and a knee repair. Her own recovery experience and her work with others continues to shape her practice as a teacher.
