Gallery at Equinox Village to Show Works by Tom Atkins
The Gallery at Equinox Village will present an exhibit of art by Tom Atkins titled ‘Line. Color. Life.’ from Thursday, January 21 through Monday, February 15. The opening, scheduled for Thursday, January 21, at 5:30 p.m., is free and open to the public and will feature light refreshments and music.
Atkins is an artist, poet and writer living in West Pawlet. He also works as a freelance broadcast engineer, leadership consultant and personal coach, and pastors two Methodist churches. Born in Virginia, he moved to Vermont in 2009. “I found a home in Vermont,” Atkins says. “There’s a peace, a sense of community and a spirit of acceptance and creativity I’ve never experienced anywhere else.”
Atkins began his artistic journey with pen and ink, and later pencil. His highly detailed work often depicted castles, old homes and animals.
“When I moved to Vermont, I also moved to color,” Atkins says. “I rediscovered art, but this time not as a representation of a thing, but as a way to capture a mood, a feeling. It became like poetry, my first love, a way to express emotions with line and color, rhythm and light.”
Atkins work has been featured in galleries and public spaces, as well as online. His photography and writing appears in magazines, web sites, marketing materials and galleries. Atkins works out of his studio in West Pawlet, primarily in oil and watercolors, at times using other media ranging from acrylic, pen and ink, colored pencils, and charcoal.
“I live across from an abandoned quarry. It’s quiet, and lends itself to introspection,” he says. “And yet, it’s only a half day’s drive to New York and Boston, whenever I need a shot of inspiration and energy. It’s the perfect place.” More information is available on his web site,
