Grants to Fund Landscaping at New Veterans’ Memorial
Visitors to the Danby-Mount Tabor Veterans’ Memorial on Main Street in Danby are greeted by a wall of steel and wrought iron with bronze plaques listing the names of nearly 900 veterans and benches constructed with Danby marble. The Memorial has had a steady stream of visitors since its dedication in 2016. Most recently, it has received grants from several generous sources to go towards landscaping the site.
The Garden Club of Manchester announced that the National Garden Club, through its Plant America Community Grant Program, has awarded $1,000 to Danby-Mount Tabor Now to provide landscaping for the new Memorial. Danby resident Susan Hinkel, a Garden Club member and the national director of Garden Clubs for New England, suggested that the organization apply for the grant. “Over 400 grant requests were submitted from throughout the country, and only 28 were made – a true tribute to our local veterans,” commented Hinkle. “We are immensely proud that our national organization, headed by Nancy Hargroves, identified this local project as one of the most significant from all of the applications submitted, and we are pleased to have partnered with Danby-Mount Tabor Now to help beautify the memorial site.”
In addition, the Harned Fowler VFW Post of Manchester, which provides valuable resources to veterans, is contributing $200, and Danby residents Richard and Nancy Smith another $500 for landscaping. Mr. Smith is a veteran of the Vietnam Era.
Rich Carter accepted the donations on behalf of Danby-Mount Tabor Now, saying, “With these funds, we plan to create a welcoming, park-like environment in the center of Danby Village to highlight the memorial – a permanent reminder of the many sacrifices made by our local veterans and their families to preserve our liberties. We are truly grateful to the Garden Club, the VFW and Dick and Nancy Smith for their generosity.”
The landscaping will be officially dedicated during a concert on Sunday, July 14, at 2 p.m., featuring the Brattleboro American Legion Band.To learn more, call Rich Carter at 860-418-9863.
