Green Mountain Club
The Manchester Section of the Green Mountain Club will meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, at the southwest corner of Stratton Base Lodge (allow 20 minutes to get from the parking lot). The group will ride to the summit of the north peak on the gondola. (No dogs are allowed.) They will snowshoe to the south peak then north on the LT to Stratton Pond, returning on the Catamount Trail to head back to the base lodge. On Sunday, January 13, they’ll meet in front of the Weston Playhouse at 1 p.m. to snowshoe in to explore the site of the former West River CCC Camp and the extensive beaver ponds there, five miles north of Weston village off Route 155. This easy hike is a half-mile each way, but the headwaters of the West River must be crossed. Bring extra clothes (especially socks), snacks and fluids. The Killington Section of the Green Mountain Club will hike to the newsly constructed Tucker-Johnston Shelter on the Long Trail, with the option of contining to Deer Leap, on Saturday, January 12. They will meet on Route 4 in Mendon for this moderate, three- to five-mile hike. Contact Larry Walter and Vivian Bebee at 802-775-3855 to join them.
