Head Start Thanks ‘School’s Out’ and Molly Stark Elementary
On June 1, North Bennington Head Start experienced a flood which necessitated relocating children and teaching staff.
Jackie Meyers of School’s Out allowed us to use her space on Main Street for six days so we could end the school year for the children. Donna MacKenzie, Karen Burnell, and Gail Johnson from Molly Stark Elementary School also allowed us to use three classrooms to run our seven-week summer program. Molly Stark’s administration worked with Head Start to give us the most developmentally appropriate space. The teachers opened their classrooms to our staff, sharing furniture and materials.
The children enjoyed their relocation adventure, thanks to the flexibility and consistency provided by the Head Start teaching staff. The families appreciated the fact that we were able to relocate and provide services over the three months. “We were really in a crisis, needing to find immediate and appropriate space for the summer’s Head Start programming. These folks really came through for us and the children,” says Ralph Provenza, UCS executive director. Head Start would like to thank School’s Out and Molly Stark for making it possible to continue to serve children and families during this time. “It is another example of how the Bennington Early Childhood community can come together in times of crisis,” adds Betsy Rathbun Gunn, Head Start director.
