Hiland Hall Student Named Runner-Up in National Contest

Hiland Hall School student Oliver Viglas was named second runner-up in the 2019 Junior Scholastic Eyewitness to History Contest. A sixth-grade student at Hiland Hall School in Bennington. Oliver won for his interview with family friend Chris Williams about Chris’s experiences as a civil rights activist in Mississippi in the 1960s. The interview, titled ‘A Boy From Vermont Fighting for Civil Rights in Mississippi,’ was among the top three chosen from over 400 contest submissions.

Oliver’s entry will appear in an upcoming issue of Junior Scholastic, a social studies magazine for students in grades six to eight, which has hosted the Eyewitness to History Contest since 2012, by encouraging students to connect with members of their community and interview people who have experienced historic events in person.
