Hoosick Commemoration to Mark The Battle of Bennington
Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, located on Route 67 in North Hoosick, N.Y., will host a commemoration of the Battle of Bennington at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16. The commemoration will include a salute from the Second Continental Regiment of Artillery and representatives from the Hoosick Township Historical Society, as well as the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. Speakers in period clothing will share both original writings and those of battle participants.Visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the area in which the Battle took place and learn more about the events leading up to the battle. The battle, which occurred 239 years ago, was a decisive American victory and much-needed morale booster following American losses at the Battle of Hubbardton just a few weeks earlier, and put British General John Burgoyne on the back foot leading up to the Battles of Saratoga. Visitors to the battlefield are encouraged to travel into Vermont to the Battle Monument in nearby Bennington which will be celebrating its 125 Anniversary this summer. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees 180 state parks and 35 historic sites, which are visited by 62 million people annually.
