Hyde Collection Announces Summer Exhibitions
The Hyde Collection has just announced its summer 2014 exhibitions. ‘Larry Kagan: Lying Shadows’ features 28 wall-mounted steel sculptures by the contemporary artist Larry Kagan. Kagan is currently a faculty member of the art department of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. His work has been collected and shown worldwide. Kagan’s hybrid form of sculpture combines the solid component of a steel wire sculpture and the shadow it casts on the wall to suggest the presence of an object that does not exist.
Shadows are a recurrent motif for the artist Edward Hopper (1882 to 1967), emphasizing a sense of alienation, anonymity and isolation. In ‘Emerging from the Shadows: Edward Hopper and His Contemporaries’ the shadow assumes a narrative and metaphoric dimension in the work of Hopper and his contemporaries, including Armin Landeck, Martin Lewis, Louis Lozowick, George Bellows, Isabel Bishop, Howard Cook and Stow Wengenroth. The exhibit will feature three watercolors and two etchings by Hopper and 20 other works by ten of his fellow artists. An opening for both exhibits takes place on Friday, June 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. RSVP by June 6 at 518-792-1761, extension 323 or email [email protected] The Hyde Collection Art Museum and Historic House is located at 161 Warren Street in Glens Falls, N.Y. 12801.
