Local Alpine Racers Top Podiums
During their winter break, the Stratton Mountain School student athletes are often still hard at work competing. This was true of the SMS alpine team, who raced locally over the break and took home top honors.
On December 31, Proctor Academy in Andover, N.H., hosted a night slalom, and SMS junior Alice Merryweather, Hingham, Mass., took top honors for U18 racers, and finished eighth overall.
Jaunuary 4, the boys’ and girls’ alpine teams competed in Southern Vermont Council slalom races at Bromley. For the boys, SMS sophomore Spencer Smith of Woodstock took first place, beating the field by nearly three seconds. SMS racers took three of the top-5 spots, with sophomore Hunter Rodrick, Chappaqua, N.Y. in second; and freshman Jack Alpert of Peru, Vt. in fourth.
In the girls’ SL, SMS again dominated top spots with freshman Mikayla Lathrop of South Londonderry, Vt. taking first by nearly two seconds. Freshman Sarah Mangiacotti, also of South Londonderry, took fifth.
January 5, the SMS boys raced in the Southern Vermont Council giant slalom race at Stratton, and Rodrick took top honors with his second-place finish. The girls traveled to Okemo for their SVC GS race, and freshman Hana Kusumi of Stratton Mountain was second; Lathrop was third.
