LTS Students Make Math Cool
On Saturday, February 1, five middle school students and math whizzes from Long Trail School competed in a Mathcounts competition at Castleton State College.
In the end, they placed third as a team, and had several individual accomplishments as well. Eighth graders Kianan Rainwalker and Evan Schmidt had the sixth and eighth overall scores respectively. Seventh grader Liam Murphy placed in the top four in the grades 6 and 7 category. All three competed in the countdown round, in which the top 12 students are paired against each other in front of an audience. They are given 45 seconds to answer challenging math questions. In this tournament-style round, Evan Schmidt finished second.
As Mathcounts coach and Long Trail math teacher Michele Farkas said, “They did an awesome job both as individuals and as a group. In addition to providing the practice of math skills, this program supplies a good chance for students to develop cooperation and team building.”
