Members of the Pawlet and West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Departments presented fire safety and prevention information to students at Mettawee Community School during  Fire Prevention Day on October 20. The fire companies had two trucks outside where they explained the different tools, ladders, hoses and trucks. They also showed videos and put on their gear to show students what they would look like in the event of an actual fire, and discussed escape routes, meeting places and fire alarms. Pawlet VFD member Jonathan Weiss said, “Having a dedicated morning to teach fire safety to the young people is a tremendous and rare outreach opportunity for the fire departments, and doing so in a school environment with the teachers present is ideal for us. I feel like the message is much more easily conveyed at an event like Fire Prevention Day, as compared to my experiences of trying to do the same thing in a setting where we don’t have the benefit of the presence of professional educators to help us keep the kids focused and directed.”
