MMF Presents ‘Spectacular Strings’
‘Spectacular Strings’ is the next in Manchester Music Festival summer concerts, and will take place on Thursday, August 6, at the Arkell Pavillion at the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester. The concert, featuring MMF’s string orchestra and conducted by Ariel Rudiakov, opens with the ‘Allegro’ for four string quartets in D minor by Johannes van Bree, who founded the renowned Amsterdam String Quartet. He served as its first violinist for over 20 years and was also a composer in nearly every genre: opera, voice, choral, orchestral and chamber. This lively chamber composition dates from about 1845.
Next, the concert will feature the ‘Concerto Number One’ for piano, trumpet and strings Opus 35, by Dimitri Shostakovich, one of the most prominent and prolific composers of 20th-century Russian music. The concerto features elements inspired by military calls and jazz music, and includes quotations and allusions from both classical and popular music. Michael Brown will performs on piano, with Alia Kuhnert on trumpet.
The concert will close with the ‘Serenade for Strings’ in C major Opus 48 by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikowsky, one of his most enduring works, written in 1880. For tickets and more information on Manchester Music Festival, call 802-362-1965 or visit the website at mmfvt.org.
