Music and Art to Celebrate the Origins of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day in Bennington starts early this year with a gathering on Saturday, May 11, honoring mothers and the early history of Mother’s Day. A group of local women, Mothers and Others For Peace, have organized a program for all ages, beginning at 11 a.m. in front of the Bennington Town Offices at 205 South Street, rain or shine. The event is a reminder of how community members appreciate mothers and all those who teach kindness, peace and justice. Activities include making paper flowers as gifts for mothers and others we admire, a sing-along, and a recital of the original 1870 Mother’s Day Proclamation. All will be invited to help make two giant flowers to be displayed near Oldcastle Theater on Main Street, one of the locations where Bennington recently witnessed hateful graffiti. The Select Board of the Town of Bennington signed a proclamation at its April 23 meeting recognizing May 11, 2019, as a day for Bennington to celebrate the historical connection between Mother’s Day and women’s work for strong communities and peace, and the many ways mothers and others have enriched the lives of their communities through their activism and advocacy.
