National Great Race Event Coming To Bennington, VT
On Sunday, June 22 the Hemmings Motor News Great Race car event will be coming back to Bennington for the second time. The event, which features classic cars in a timed race from Maine to Florida, will be stopping for lunch at the Bennington Station Municipal Parking Lot on Depot St. The event starts at noon and is open to the public, and the Bennington Fire Department will be selling food as a way to raise money for the department.
Over the three hour event more than 100 cars will pass through Bennington and stop for lunch for exactly 60 minutes. Cars will be spaced one minute apart ensuring accurate time recording. An opening ceremony featuring a well-known Great Race emcee Corky Coker, along with local officials and state dignitaries will welcome the drivers as they pass through the checkpoint arch to mark their time. This national event, known for its great cars, eclectic drivers and non-stop, rain or shine determination began in the early 1980s, and today boasts drivers from all over the world, and over $150,000 in prize money.
Bennington will be the first community that the Race has ever visited twice, the first being the 2011 finish line, where a crowd of over 3,000 people greeted the racers at the end of their journey from Chattanooga, Tennessee. This year racers will begin in Ogunquit, Maine and follow the East Coast, using mainly back roads all the way to The Villages, Florida.
