New Skete Monasteries to Host Annual Open House
The monks and nuns of New Skete invite you to enjoy a day of activities at their monasteries on Saturday, June 2. Their annual Open House, held in conjunction with the Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival, is a way to explore the homes of these famed dog experts and cheesecake bakers and become acquainted with the monasteries, located in the countryside just east of Cambridge, N.Y.
At the monks’ monastery, located at 273 New Skete Lane (four miles from the village), the chapel community will host its annual bake sale and offer light lunch fare from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours of the churches and their history will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. There will be a puppy socializing demonstration at 2, and a dog training demonstration at 3 p.m.
The nuns’ monastery, located at 343 Ashgrove Road (two miles from the village), will offer tours of their cheesecake bakery from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The chapel community will be present at the ‘Taste of Cambridge’ event in the village from 5 to 9, where they will be selling slices of the Nuns of New Skete Cheesecake. Visitors are welcome to join the monks and nuns in worship at 5 p.m.
New Skete is a religious community of men and women dedicated to monastic life in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Monks of New Skete raise German Shepherd dogs and train dogs of all breeds. They are the writers of the best-selling books, ‘The Art of Raising Your Puppy,’ ‘How to Be Your Dogs Best Friend,’ ‘Divine Canine,’ ‘I and Dog,’ and ‘Let Dogs Be Dogs,’ among others.
