NorShaft Lions Celebrate 60+ Years
The NorShaft Lions Club celebrated the founding of their Club in 1953 on May 3. Starting out with 21 members, today the Club has grown to around 70 members who are highly involved in their local community, Vermont Lions and Lions International. The Club still has three of the original Charter members living in the area. They are Bruce Lavigne, Joe Hall and John Armstrong. Bruce, who is still a lifetime member of the club, has been an inspiring presence at NorShaft for the last 63 years. It was quite a celebration to share stories and meet old friends during the evening. The original charter was on display.
At the meeting, the NorShaft Lions honored Marlene Driscole as their Citizen of the Year for her work in rejuvenating Lake Paran and all her work in the community, in the presence of 46 members of the club and their guests. This is a presentation that is done each year to recognize individuals who make an on-going contribution to North Bennington and Shaftsbury.
Over the past year, the NorShaft Lions have screened the vision of over 2,900 students, conducted diabetes screenings, provided eyeglasses and hearing aids to the needy, worked on the new sod and clay for the Little League field at Howard Park, provided a security camera system for Howard Park, hosted the Shaftsbury Christmas Tree Lighting and the North Bennington Halloween Parade, sponsored the Poster Contest for fifth and sixth graders at Shaftsbury Elementary and the Village School of North Bennington and the Speak Out Contest for high school juniors and seniors. They also bought Christmas presents for needy children, provided sand to senior citizens for their winter walkways and will be giving out five $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors. The NorShaft Lions continue to grow and be involved in the communities of North Bennington and Shaftsbury. Anyone interested in joining can call 802-442-0380 or email email@example.com.
