Make sure you head to North Bennington on February 1 for a day of family fun at the town’s Winterfest and Penguin Plunge. There will be a walkable map of the village available, or take advantage of wagon rides to help you get to all the venues. To start, bring the family to Story Hour at the McCullough Library at 10 a.m., then head to the Plunge site at Lake Paran on the boat dock side at 10:30 for a Zumba warm up with Andrea Malinowski; the Penguin Plunge takes place at 11 with a fabulous Warm Up Party at the Vermont Arts Exchange to follow, where you can sample over 12 different kinds of beer and wine at a cash bar provided by Kevin’s,  and enjoy live music, a chili tasting thanks to the Norshaft Lions Club, massage and raffles.  After you warm up, go to the Ice Carving Contest at the North Bennington Train Station. Cast your vote for the best; winners will be chosen at 3 p.m. At 3:30 the Pet Parade takes off at Whitman’s Feed Store Warehouse. Local business join the action, too. Create snowflakes at Powers’ Market; get the chili dog special at North Bennington Variety Store; check out the Dion Snow Shoe demonstration at Nature’s Closet. Kevin’s will have lunch and hot toddy specials. There’s an Indoor Carnival at the elementary school with lots of kids’ activities from 12 to 4. Sleds will be available at Norshaft Park. After dark, the American Legion throws a party with live band, DJ and karaoke. Sponsored by the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce. For more information, go to bennington.com.
