Local author Jon Katz shares his humorous and touching observations on the animals in his life at a book presentation being held at Northshire Bookstore.

Join Northshire Bookstore from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, for wine and cheese, with cello music provided by Ramsay Eyre and an exhibit by local artist Vicki Bowden. At 6 p.m., author, professional horse trainer and rehabilitation expert Sharon Wilse will present her book, ‘Horse Speak.’

On Thursday, July 20, at 6 p.m., writer, filmmaker, and author John Healey will present his novel inspired by one of history’s most intriguing forgotten chapters; the arrival of Japanese Samurai on the shores of Europe. The novel is an essential and timeless one about the discoveries and conflicts that arise from the forging of relationships across borders, both geographical and cultural.

On Friday, July 21, at 6 p.m., local author Jon Katz will present his newest book, ‘Talking to Animals,’ about how to understand what is really going on in the heads of our pets. Devoting each chapter to an animal who has played an important role in his life, Katz tells funny and illuminating stories about his profound experiences with them and shows readers how healthy engagement with animals falls into five key areas. Meet Simon the donkey who arrives at Katz’s farm near death and now serves as his Tai Chi partner; Red the dog who started out antisocial and untrained and is now a therapy dog; and Winston the rooster who was injured defending his hens from a hawk and has better interpersonal skills than most humans. Thoughtful and intelligent, lively and heartwarming, this book will completely change the way you think about and interact with animals.

Kids are invited to come on Saturday, July 22, at 11 a.m. when children’s author Heather Preusser will read her new children’s book, ‘A Symphony of Cow Bells,’ a delightful story about a Swiss dairy cow who loses her bell and disrupts the harmony of the herd.

Later that day, there will be a special screening of the short film documentary, ‘Saltwater Buddha,’ based on the internationally acclaimed book by Jaimal Yogis. Following the film at 6 p.m., Yogis will be in conversation with Arnie Kozak, author of ‘Mindfulness A to Z’ and ‘108 Metaphors for Mindfulness,’ to discuss Yogis’ new book, ‘All our Waves are Water,’ which reflects  his continued search to find meaning and a greater understanding of the Divine in the world’s oceans and in everyday life.
