Tuesday, October 6, at 6 p.m., Northshire presents Vermont author Jack Mayer’s ‘Before the Court of Heaven.’ Set in Germany after World War I, this work of historical fiction accurately depicts the rising storm of Nazi ascendance. Ernst Werner Techow, son of a magistrate, is recruited into a clandestine assassination network trying to bring down Germany’s fledgling Weimar democracy, the seeds of the Third Reich, and participates in the murder of Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau, the highest-ranking Jew in the Weimar Republic. While on trial for his life, he receives an
unfathomable offer of forgiveness that jolts his surety in the fascist cause and sets him on a complex and harrowing journey of redemption.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, October 7, Kenneth Davis, the New York Times bestselling author of ’Don’t Know Much About History’ and’America’s Hidden History,’ will discuss his new book,’In the Shadow of Liberty: The Hidden History of Slavery, Four Presidents, and Five Black Lives.’ The book presents the stories of five enslaved people who were the legal property of four of America’s most honored men, making the case that America was conceived in liberty but born in shackles.
Tickets are on sale now for a special event at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 10, when New York Times bestselling author Geraldine Brooks discusses ‘The Secret Chord,’ her absorbing novel about the life of King David. The Pulitzer Prize -winning author of ‘People of the Book’ and ‘March,’ Brooks has achieved both popular and critical acclaim, with more than two million copies of her novels sold. In ‘The Secret Chord,’ Brooks takes on one of literature’s richest and most enigmatic figures: a man who shimmers between history and legend. Peeling away the myth to bring David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame; shepherd to soldier; hero to traitor; beloved king to murderous despot, and into his remorseful and diminished dotage. ‘The Secret Chord’ provides new context for some of the best-known episodes of David’s life while revealing others that have been neglected. We see David through the eyes of those who love him or fear him. Brooks has an uncanny ability to hear and transform characters from history, and this beautifully written, unvarnished saga of faith, desire, family, ambition, betrayal and power will enthrall her many fans.
