Oldcastle Theatre Presents ‘The Belle of Amherst’
Actor Paula Mann portrays the iconic American poet, Emily Dickinson, in Oldcastle Theatre Company’s production of ‘The Belle of Amherst’ by William Luce, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 1 to 3. The play recreates the life of America’s greatest woman poet from the age of 15 when she was full of hope until she died at 56, a virtual recluse, with liberal excerpts from her poetry and with the main character playing the roles of her father, teacher and friends. Mann, a long time favorite of Oldcastle and Dorset Theatre Festival audiences has performed in regional theatres around the country. She has appeared in several productions with Oldcastle Theatre, and is currently director of the Theater Program at Green Mountain College.
Luce often specialized in one-person plays such as ‘Barrymore,’ presented on Broadway starring Christopher Plummer, and ‘The Last Flapper’ the story of Zelda Fizgerald, and won many awards including the Peabody, the Christopher, the Carbonell and Columbia University’s Armstrong Award.
Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. For tickets, visit oldcastletheatre.org or call 802-447-0564. Oldcastle Theatre is located at 331 Main Street in downtown Bennington.
