VFW Post 6471 officers have announced the theme for the 2016 Voice of Democracy essay contest as ‘My Responsibility to America’ This contest, sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars and Post 6471, is open to students in grades nine through 12, who should submit a recording of their written draft on a CD between three and five minutes in length (plus or minus five seconds). It should be delivered to VFW Post 6471 on Depot Street in Manchester by 6 p.m. on November 1, 2016. More than 52,000 high school students enter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and incentives, starting at the local Post 6471 level before advancing to the District One level, then against their peers from the other two Vermont districts to become the state winner, who travels all expenses paid to Washington DC to represent Vermont in a competition against 53 peers from all states and territories.
