Given that less than two months had passed since the last highway clean-up organized by the Battenkill Conservancy and the Clearwater Chapter of Trout Unlimited, volunteers were hoping for a sparse trash collection. However, when the dozen or so volunteers who came out to help last Saturday were done, they had produced an equal number of fully loaded, extra-large Department of Transportation garbage bags. The roadside trash was collected in less than an hour along the five-mile stretch of scenic Route 313 highway. Battenkill Conservancy and Trout Unlimited volunteers take advantage of the regular clean-ups to share information and exchange ideas about the river and the watershed; however, they would prefer that passing motorists keep their trash inside their vehicles. The next ‘Keep It Clean’ highway clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, August 27, at 9 a.m. You can help by giving an hour to join other volunteers at the State Line Route 313 Rest Area – and remind everyone you know that littering our roadways is not acceptable!
