‘Schoolhouse Rock, Live!’
The Emmy Award-winning 1970s cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through song is not only making a small-screen comeback, it’s instructing a whole new generation on the musical stage in ‘Schoolhouse Rock, Live!’ The characters are engaging, the songs are terrific and the set design by Edward Morris is interactive and colorful. Broadway veteran Susan Haefner directs the cast of young performers from top undergraduate musical theatre programs in this fun family production.
The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company has a tradition of starting its summer season with a family-friendly show featuring its Young Company members. This year a talented group of seven performers anchors the season, beginning as the effervescent ‘Schoolhouse Rock, Live!’ cast and continuing as regulars in Weston’s late-night cabaret and appearing in key ensemble roles in ‘Mamma Mia!’ Haefner has directed the Young Company in previous seasons and received accolades for her work with Castleton University and Hartford, Connecticut’s ‘Playhouse on Park.’ “We’re in rehearsals now and it’s a joyful experience! This is a tremendously talented cast and creative team,” Haefner said, “and we hope audiences will laugh, sing and dance along with us, and maybe even learn little something along the way!” ‘Schoolhouse Rock, Live!’ runs Thursday, June 23 through Sunday, July 10, at the Weston Rod and Gun Club, 982 Route 100, Weston. Show times are Tuesday to Thursday at 1 p.m., Friday and Saturday 1 and 4 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. It runs approximately 60 minutes with no intermission.
