Selections from Schubert’s ‘Wintereisse’ at the Courthouse

On Sunday, April 17, at 3 p.m., guests at the Courthouse Community Center in Salem, N.Y., will be treated to a performance of the first 12 songs from Franz Schubert’s ‘Wintereisse.’ Tenor Michael Gallagher and pianist Robin Kibler will provide their interpretation of these moving songs.‘Wintereisse’ (Winter Journey) is a song cycle for voice and piano that was first published in 1828. Schubert, who was suffering from a debilitating illness at the time, created a somber setting for 24 poems by the prominent German poet, Wilhelm Muller. In it, the importance of the piano is a role equal to that of a singer. The piano’s varied rhythms express the different moods of the poet similar to that achieved by a vocalist. In lieu of tickets, a free will offering is requested to benefit Lunch, Learn and Play, the CCC’s summer enrichment program for area children. Call 518-854-7053 to learn more.
