Shaftsbury Historical Society proudly announces the 2016 Ordinary Heroes recipients, Brenda and George Keen. The couple is know for their kind hearts and gentle hands. Brenda is a life-long resident of Shaftsbury, and George has lived here for over 40 years. George served as a nurse’s assistant at the Vermont Veterans’ Home for decades and Brenda worked at Shaftsbury Elementary School cafeteria. Together, these civic-minded Shaftsbury residents have completed countless acts of kindness for our community. They have managed the food shelf at the United Methodist Church, soliciting many businesses and organizations for support. To supplement the program they grow numerous vegetables each year, and make their produce available to all. Brenda has also served as Sunday School superintendent at their church. Together, they served as foster parents for many years, working with the DCF to open their home to children in need. Brenda and George have also reached out to our local elderly and shut-ins by providing companionship and assistance to them, whether it be by picking up groceries, providing rides to doctor’s appointments or taking the elderly of our community to church services. These fine folks certainly have a unique blend of being ordinary yet extraordinary individuals who contribute to the fabric of our community.
