Sheila Nichols to Receive Citizen of the Year Award
The public is invited to join the Poultney Chamber on Saturday, November 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., to honor life-long Poultney resident, Sheila Nichols, who will receive the 2013 Poultney Citizen of the Year Award. Light hors d’oeurves and celebration cake will be served at the reception, to take place in the Young At Heart Senior Center, 206 Furnace Street, Poultney, Vt.
Sheila is known to many Vermonters for her work as a professional educator for over 40 years in Rutland County. She has been instrumental in many community programs: the planning and orchestration of Poultney’s July 4 parade, field and fireworks; fundraisers and bereavement dinners with the Catholic Daughters; the Poultney Women’s Club Tree of Giving Project; she makes sure the elderly receive beautiful holiday baskets, helps facilitate breakfast with the Easter Bunny, has chaired the Calendar Committee, and a host of other fund-raising events. She has also helped families connect with the Salvation Army for fuel assistance, and serves on the board of trustees of Poultney Food Shelf.
Now retired, she volunteers with the BackPack program, preparing backpacks for students in need of school supplies at the beginning of each school year, and continues to expertly and quietly support educational boards and programs as a consultant, mentor and literacy leader. A devoted wife, mother of two and grandmother of five, Sheila feels that Poultney has afforded her family a quality of life not found elsewhere.
The Citizen of the Year Award, presented annually since 1990, honors a resident citizen who has made major contributions to the betterment of Poultney; has distinguished herself or himself through outstanding service to the community and typifies the true spirit of service and self-sacrifice in representing the finest ideals of Poultney citizenship. The Citizen of the Year will be the Grand Marshal of the 2014 July 4 parade in Poultney.
