Slate Valley quarries in New York and Vermont provide most of the colored roofing slate produced in the United States today. The Slate Valley Museum in Granville, N.Y., expands the perception of slate as a functional material with the opening of ‘Slate as Muse,’ a five-month national art exhibition that celebrates slate through the language of fine art. The public is invited to attend a free Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony on Friday, June 6, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The exhibition features 19 professional artists from throughout the country, who used slate to create 27 works of sculpture, painting, photography, mosaic, encaustic and mixed media. A special Curator’s Tour of the exhibition will take place at 6 p.m. prior to the Opening Reception for an admission fee of $10.

The Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water Street in Granville, N.Y.  Call 518-642-1417 or visit slatevalleymuseum.org  for more information.
