Spend a ‘Day in the Dirt’ at Smokey House Center
Smokey House Center in Danby will be participating in the Vermont Community Garden Network’s statewide ‘Day in the Dirt’ event. This community and school garden work day is a great way to kick off the growing season. It began four years when Vermont Community Garden Network (VCGN) gathered teams of volunteers to visit garden sites around Burlington and give them a spring boost, while introducing more people to the joys of community gardening and celebrating how these sites nourish and connect so many people – and it’s been happening ever since.
This year, VCGN has invited community garden sites across the state of Vermont to join the fun by making the last Saturday in April an annual tradition. Day in the Dirt offers local organizations and groups an opportunity to promote and invite the public to participate on their own garden work days and planning sessions.
On Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, you’ll be working at Smokey House Center with other gardening enthusiasts and local volunteers to help them establish their newly acquired education garden space. Participants will add soil and compost, level and clean up the raised beds, remove weeds and rocks to make new garden beds, and design a great space for kids from the local elementary school to learn in. Other tasks include building a chicken staircase, and if there is enough time, cleaning up perennials. They’ll also be starting seeds and sharing seeds at this event, so feel free to bring any that you don’t think you will use this season. All are welcome. Tools and instruction will be provided.
Smokey House Center is located at 426 Danby Mountain Road in Danby. Parking will be in the lot closer to the two white buildings. There will be signs from the parking lot to direct you to the education garden space. There’s no need to call ahead, but if you have any questions, you can contact Jamie Lombardo at firstname.lastname@example.org or 802-293-2300.
