SVAC Prepares for Art Auction
On Friday, October 2, at 6 p.m., Nathan Auction will be conducting an auction for the Southern Vermont Art Center in Manchester. The auction is the result of the Board’s decision to sell off works of art not deemed to be part of their permanent collection. Proceeds raised will go towards maintaining and preserving the permanent collection. Many works have been gifts from supporting members over the years. There are about 20 works from current member-artists whose work is represented in galleries around the country, and several that were in the permanent collection. Works include paintings by Ossip Zadkine, Jules Andre Smith and Montague Dawson. There are also 40 photographs of rock and roll and other musical icons taken by George Kalinsky, head photographer at Madison Square Garden. These photographs were shown at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and include live photos of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presely, Jerry Garcia, James Brown, Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul McCartney and many others. There is also a photo of the Rolling Stones from their first-ever show at Madison Square Garden.
