SVM to Host Guitar Pickers’ Contest
Come to Slate Valley Museum for an afternoon of free local music on Saturday, July 30, from 12 noon to 3 p.m. The museum will host a Guitar Pickers Contest, where the grand prize is an acoustic guitar and case donated by Adirondack Guitar in Hudson Falls, N.Y. Other prizes include music accessories and gift certificates to music shops. Anyone can enter the contest. It will run like an open mic night, with community judges. Musicians can play one or two songs of their choice. Bands and solo performers are welcome; pre-register for the contest at 518-642-1417. The event is completely free to the public. Pack a picnic for yourself or enjoy treats including lemonade and watermelon donated by TD Bank of Granville.
The event will be hosted on the museum’s back lawn along the Mettawee River.
While at the museum visitors can see the new exhibit, ‘A New Deal for the Hills and Valleys,’ that tells the effect of FDR’s New Deal on the Slate Valley Region. Music was an important part of keeping morale up during the Great Depression. People nationwide, including community members of the Slate Valley, would go to dance halls and pavilions where bands played. Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water Street in Granville, N.Y.
