Symphony Rehearsals Begin
Bennington’s very own community orchestra, Sage City Symphony is ready to welcome new players, especially strings.
Each Sunday evening, as many as fifty players arrive for rehearsal, coming not only from Bennington and Shaftsbury, Vt., but from northern Berkshire County in Massachusetts and the Albany, N.Y. area.
A registered non-profit organization, the orchestra offers four concerts each season, relying on volunteer players conducted by Music Director Michael Finckel.
Bennington College offers the rehearsal and concert space. There is no admission charge for concerts; instead, financial donations and grants help to meet expenses. A volunteer Board of Directors shepherds organizational and fund-raising efforts, alongside orchestra manager Gail Smith.
The mission of the orchestra is to offer local musicians the opportunity to play challenging orchestral repertoire, including newly commissioned works. Each year it presents one concert focused on student compositions, to be drawn this year from students at Bennington College and other area colleges. In alternate seasons, compositions are sought from local high school students. Collaborations with other performing arts groups have been frequent.
There are no auditions required of new members, although
players are expected to be able to handle moderately difficult repertoire.
Players interested in joining the orchestra should consult the orchestra’s website for further information, sagecitysymphony.org, or contact Gail Smith at 802-733-3382 or email@example.com.
