presentation hosted by the Bennington Historical Society.

Bennington Historical Society will present a program at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, at the Bennington Museum. The program is open to the public and free. David Bennett will discuss Ethan Allen and his role in the Haldimand Negotiations, one of the least-understood epochs in Vermont history. Much of what we know of those negotiations comes from Ira Allen, with whatever slant he preferred to have us believe. Bennett’s book, ‘A Few Lawless Vagabonds’ is the first systematic and objective attempt to sort out the facts. Ethan Allen was a complex and controversial figure; his positions in his discussions with the British officials probably changed through the years. Bennett will focus on the transition years of 1780 through 1783, breaking his analysis into two phases, before and after January 1, 1782.
