Two Area Businesses Celebrate 75 Years in the Northshire
This year, family-owned lumber and building material supplier, r. k. Miles Inc. in Manchester Center and Mad Tom Orchard in East Dorset are celebrating their 75th anniversaries.
In 1940, the first McIntosh and Cortland apple trees were setting root at Mad Tom Orchard in East Dorset. At the same time, r.k. Miles opened its first location in Manchester Center. Both companies learned early on that their success was dependent on the loyalty of their customers in the community.
Today, Sylvia and Tom Smith carry on the tradition started by the Parsons family, and then later on by Tom’s father. To date, they have pruned over 100 of the original trees and now have a total of 1300 trees producing the two New England classics, McIntosh and Cortland, as well as other popular varieties.
“Mad Tom Orchard had many friends over the years before we returned, and they have encouraged our efforts, said Tom. “It is great to see so many local people who came here as kids, bringing their own children and grandchildren back to enjoy the orchard.”
Building on tradition and expanding to meet new demands is the name of the game at r. k. Miles. Third-generation owner Joe Miles has maintained the same family and community-focused business practices that had made its Manchester location a great success. In 2005, the company expanded to Middlebury, and Williamstown, Mass., further expanding to West Hatfield, Mass., in 2008, and building a brand new facility at that location in 2011.
“It was a nice surprise to find out that a great longtime customer would be sharing the same anniversary as r. k. Miles so we decided to celebrate together,” said Joe Miles. “The Smiths have always been great customers and have provided valuable feedback on our business which we so appreciate. No fall is complete without a trip to Mad Tom Orchard,” he added. This apple harvest season, in appreciation for their loyal customers, the two businesses will be offering special savings to their customers at each of their locations.
