WPA Poster and Chalk Art Contest at Slate Valley Museum
The Slate Valley Museum welcomes families with youth in grades K to 12 to unleash their inner artist and re-create WPA posters and mini chalk art murals in a friendly art competition on First Friday, September 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. Come to the museum to view replicas of WPA posters and choose a couple to re-create using chalk or paper. A panel of jurors will select winning artworks in three age groups. Participants are also welcome to create a work of their own. Activities will also include hopscotch and other art-related activities, inside and outside. Winners of the event will receive art supply kits, supplied by the Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. The first 50 kids through the door will get a free ice cream cone from Stewarts Shops. TD Bank of Granville will also be supplying chalk that the kids will be able to take home. Participation in the artwork competition is free.
The WPA mural by Martha Levy on exhibit at the museum inspired this event. The mural displays men working in the local slate valley quarries. Levy started working on WPA projects in 1934 and made this mural originally for the Granville High School to teach students about their heritage and slate production. The Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water Street in Granville, N.Y. For information, visit the museum’s website at slatevalleymuseum.org or call 518-642-1417.
