Step back in time for a free turn-of-the-century carnival in celebration of Southwestern Vermont Health Care’s birthday, presented by Jerome Construction and The Bank of Bennington, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, the 100th anniversary of its opening in 1918. The event will take place on the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Campus at 100 Hospital Drive in Bennington. The day’s centennial-themed events are free and include good, old-fashioned activities for all ages. The purpose of the event is to acknowledge SVHC’s rich history, starting with founder Henry Putnam, and to thank physicians, staff and community members, who have contributed to making SVHC the award-winning health system it is today. All are welcome. Completely tented, the event will take place rain or shine. Updates, including a map of the event and complete schedule, will be posted to svhealthcare.org.

Among the event highlights are a parade, a guest appearance by Henry Putnam, a free barbecue, classic fair treats, games and prizes for all ages, a train ride, juggler, a touch-a-truck exhibit, antique automobiles, a costume photo booth, and performances by local music and gymnastic groups. A formal presentation will include the reading of Southwestern Vermont Health Care’s Centennial Proclamation, followed by a barbershop rendition of  ‘Happy Birthday’ and cake for all.

An important part of the day’s festivities is the Cancer Center Community Crusaders Day of Celebration and Cupcake Challenge. The crusaders will host a vendor fair, entertainment, and basket raffle, in addition to their much-anticipated cupcake contest. All proceeds benefit local cancer patients and research efforts. As a part of Cancer Survivors Day, cancer survivors of the community will be the guests of honor.

The day also includes the United Counseling Service Go-the-Distance 5K Race and Kids Fun Run fundraisers, and SVHC’s attempt to break a world record for the largest jump rope race. Registration for these three events is open. Go online to active.com/bennington-vt.
