Cliff Oliver to Speak on John Henry
The Rupert Historical Society will host photographer Cliff Oliver of Greenwich, N.Y., at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, at Rupert United Methodist Church. Oliver, now retired, heard many stories of adversity, triumph, love and tragedy from the days of early America during his career with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. He will be discussing one such story as he presents ‘John Henry, a Steel-Driving Man.’ American folklore has long celebrated this Afro-American laborer through stories and songs that tell of a powerful man racing a steam drill to help build a railroad tunnel in the 1870s. The program is free and open to the public, and the Church is handicapped-accessible. To learn more, call Gene Higgins at 802-394-7738.
