Discussing the Politics and Art in the Game of Mahjong

The Sweetwood Lecture Series presents ‘Mahjong Symbolism and Why Chairman Mao Banned the Game,’ a lecture and presentation by Gregg Swain, on Friday August 15, at 4 p.m. Swain is an art enthusiast with a new-found passion for Mahjong. She studies the art found on vintage Mahjong sets and accessories to understand what the craftsmen intended to convey. Mahjong records were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution in China; by collecting, studying, appreciating and sharing her love of the art of Mahjong, Swain hopes to honor the craftsmen’s legacy by bringing their art back into the light. Please come to enjoy this fascinating and beautiful presentation. Sweetwood of Williamstown is located at 1611 Cold Spring Road, Route 7, Williamstown, Mass. All are welcome.
