Dorset Barbecue Barbershop Quartet to Perform at Vets’ Home
The Dorset Barbecue Barbershop Quartet will be performing at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, at the Vermont Veterans’ Home in Bennington. All are invited to come hear their wonderful melodies from a bygone era as well as the not-so-distant past. The concert is free and open to the public due to the kind sponsorship of headmaster Mark Tashjian of Burr and Burton Academy. The Quartet formed in January 2015 when the Congregational Church of Peru was planning a show to raise funds for the installation of a toilet in its historic structure, and were looking for acts. Four members of the Dorset Church Choir, which was participating en masse, decided to add some barbershop harmonies in their own performance. Richard Grip, lead, David Chandler, tenor, Henry Chandler, baritone, and Roger Squire, bass, were a bit apprehensive as they prepared to sing two songs, but much to their delight, received much positive feedback from the standing-room-only crowd. Since then, they’ve memorized those two original songs and have added 16 more to their repertoire, aspiring to the level of excellence of the Yale Whiffenpoofs to perform classic barbershop quartet tunes as well as songs of the late 20th century, including hits from the Beatles.
