Old-Time Fiddle and Banjo Con

Ida Mae and John Specker will present a concert of old-time fiddle and banjo music from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, at the Andover Town Hall. This music has its roots in the ancient musical tradition of the Celts; fittingly, November 1 is the Celtic New Year’s Day. The program will feature dynamic twin fiddling, banjo and fiddle duets and accompaniments on an actual antique washboard, with plenty of soulful singing. The Speckers’ rendition of Rockingham Cindy, an old Virginia tune – the lyrics of which so easily translate to our own area – is not to be missed. John Specker, ‘Father of the Ithaca Sound,’ has lived in Vermont since the late 1970s. The tunes he and his daughter play are simple and generally not rare, but they strip them down, chew them up, internalize their essence and then present them with an intensity that has to be seen to be believed. All are welcome, including families with small children. Admission is free. Visit thespeckers.com to learn more.
