Sheep Dog Trial & Farm Festival this Weekend in Rupert
With the arrival of summer at Merck Forest and Farmland Center comes the 11th annual Sheep Dog Trial and Farm Festival. This two-day weekend event on Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19, is a combination of Merck’s Farm Festival, which offers fun for all ages, and the competitive sheep dog trial of the Northeast Border Collie Association’ (NEBCA) – the first leg of its Vermont Triple Crown, culminating in Quechee later in the summer.
NEBCA has members from all over the eastern seaboard and the Maritime Provinces in Canada. The Merck Forest Open could see as many as 60 dogs compete. Visitors to the event can enjoy watching the competition from the viewing tent and learn more about the organization at their vending and information table.
Merck Forest and Farmland Center’s family-friendly Farm Festival will feature activity stations that will allow participants to explore the many facets of raising sheep. Regional fiber artists will be in the Sap House offering their woven, knitted and felted products for sale. Edward’s Market of Granville, N.Y., will be there to provide a delicious menu of food. Visit Dolly the lamb and see baby chicks, too. You can also find your way through the hay maze, pick berries at the Farm’s you-pick berry patch, take a hike through the forest and or embark on a wagon ride tour.
Tickets for admission, sold at the gate, are $5 per adult and $3 per child. Kids under age four are free. For detailed information, visit merckforest.org or call 802-394-7836. Merck Forest and Farmland Center is located at 3270 Route 315 in Rupert.
